A Love-Letter To Friendship

Image: wooden heart

This image reminds me of my roots, the wonderful barns that I used to explore back in Michigan. Fond memories of life in the country.

Today is my birthday. A birthday is a good time for reflection. I was so overwhelmed by generous birthday wishes and greetings from all over the world that I was inspired to write this poem.

A Love-Letter To Friendship

Some of my Friends have been my Friend since childhood.

We laughed together, cried together, and celebrated

Life’s little victories.

Some Friends were on my team when we played baseball,

Softball, kickball, football, or tennis. I also had Friends I

Played tetherball with. We rode bikes, explored the world

Of toads and fishes. We rode horses, explored the woods

And fields, went swimming, fishing, turtling, and wondered

About the glory of nature, God, and the outdoors.

With some Friends, we had sleepovers, good food, read

Books together, and played our favorite records.

Sometimes, as a Friend, you were surprised to find

that you were jealous of your Friends.  Giving you

new feelings that made you feel awkward and strange.

Growing up is not an easy thing. You make mistakes,

hurt people’s feelings, feel scared and unsure. But,

Your best Friends make the journey a bit easier each

Step of the way.

Some Friends were the kind of Friend that you shared

Everything with, even your wildest crazy ideas that

You knew would scare anyone else you shared them with!

Some Friends were once Friends, but have moved on.

Some Friends are Friends only for a season or two, then

Life takes them down a different path. Thank you,

My Friend, for adding to my life’s experience, I wish

You well.

As you get older, it seems your true Friends become

Fewer but more priceless as you learn and grow

With them.  You discover new feelings, a more

Forgiving side of yourself, a more tolerant side, and

You learn about unconditional love.

With today’s technology, some Friends are Friends you’d

Love to meet but circumstances dictate that they will

Remain a virtual Friend only.  You discover though, that

This does not diminish their role in your life. With these

Types of Friends, you learn that some will become the

Most influential of Friends, inspiring you in ways you never

Dreamed of. Supporting you in ways that no one else has.

Yes, there are many types of Friends, but a Friend whenever,

Especially if forever, is one of the most precious of life’s

Greatest blessings. Don’t take advantage of these Friends or

Take them for granted. Cherish those who are there on stormy

days, sunny days and rainbow days.

Are you my Friend? Let’s find out.  How will you add to my life and

I to yours?

To all of the special and unforgettable Friends in my life and to

All those I haven’t met yet.

Here’s my heart,

    Hi Deborah

    What a lovely post 🙂

I have friends of most of those types. although the longest term friendships are from ante- and post-natal classes. We still meet now to share triumphs and tragedies about our babies – even though most of us are now grandmas.

The friend who gave me the best advice and support when my husband left me 13 years ago was a lady I never met – we only ever emailed. (She said “Focus on the freedom” – in case it’s helpful to anyone else. She drifted off to live overseas and we lost touch very amicably but I often think of her – my supporting angel just when I needed one.

I even value the friendship of the only friend I parted with in anger (on both sides). She taught me a lot, for which I am grateful – but ironically I saw from what she taught me that it was time to move on from her control. Very valuable lesson.

So, thanks to all my valued friends, whether you are still in my life or not!

      What a wonderful comment Joy!

Thank you for sharing something so personal and valuable. That’s what I’ve learned over the years, too. There are no mistakes, only experiences. If we take the time and perspective to see, even in difficult situations, there is much to be learned from it all. 🙂

True Friendship is very precious. We need to treasure it and be grateful.

Sometimes Enock, friends are only for a time or a season. Whatever the length of time, we never forget the impact they had on our life.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting!
